Overview:
ComStar built the Dante-class vessels in the 2900s, a stopgap measure to support the nascent ComStar Guards and Militia while their Star League vessels were refurbished. They ended up being a permanent part of the Com Guards as they became known until the entire class died during the Jihad along with most of the navy.
After recapturing Terra, ComStar placed a high priority on rebuilding their fleet, and they quickly upgraded the Dante with modern technology. But they'd didn't have the resources to build enough Dantes to rebuild the last of the Old Star League fleets, so they used the Dante as a base for the second stage of the Post-Jihad Naval Reconstruction Program.
The Mars uses the same hull as the original Dante, making the two classes look alike to the point that it is almost impossible to distinguish them before they open fire. The Mars is built out of much lighter metals though, designed to save mass and resources, allowing ComStar to build three Mars with the same material cost as one Dante. The main weaknesses of the Mars compared to the Dante is that the Mars' lighter components buckle under damage must faster and its lighter naval cannons are unable to match the destructiveness of the Dante. They still use the C3 system that shares targeting data with other ships and a Mars squadron can outfight their mass in ships in almost all cases, so ComStar has continued to build it to this day.
Three to four Mars escort every Dante, and some major ComStar installations have a Mars permanently assigned to protect them. Along with the Dante, the Mars are the most impressive sign of ComStar power in the modern era, and their arrival is a clear sign of ComStar interest in a region. Whether that interest is good or bad depends on the point of view of the locals.
