Overview:
Built as an answer to the Tamar's Pact's need for expanded transport capabilities after the Jade Falcon War, the Baldur-class Frigate is more an armed transport than a true ship of war. Capable of carrying twelve thousand tons of cargo in four massive modular holds, the Baldur is able to move anything that needs to be moved. The holds are arrayed two on each side of the main ship's spine for easy access by groundside loading stations. Instead of manually loading the bays though, the Tamar Pact has developed cargo containers of the right size that can simply be locked onto the Baldur's hard points. The cargo pods are outside the Baldur's main armor bands, making them highly vulnerable to weapons fire, but the containers themselves are often designed to be aerodynamic which keeps them from being ripped off during atmopheric reentry.
Hundreds of cargo pods have been designed over the years, many of which have turned Baldurs into support ships and sometimes even a poor man's WarShip. Heavy duty power linkages enabled some intrepid designers to even place naval-class weapons in the pods, making for a rather impressive broadside weapons fire capability. Some other pods are designed to carry up to 20 fighters or BattleMechs, 15 small craft, many vehicles and infantry, fuel, or basic consumables for a fleet on deployment. Most pods carry basic cargo though and are often filled with many standard cargo trailers that can be pulled off the pod, attached to a tractor, and pulled away from the DropPort to its final destination. A fifth smaller cargo bay takes up a small space on the lower hull, easy to access via smaller forklifts at DropPorts. Dedicated to holding the food and spare parts a Baldur and its crew needs on trips between planets, this hold is rarely used for trade goods.
The Baldur is a common sight in the Tamar Pact, and is becoming less rare in other parts of the Human Sphere, especially on major trade worlds where DropPort facilities designed to handle the large cargo pods are beginning to appear. Without access to such facilities, unloading and loading a Baldur's cargo pods takes a significant amount of time, cutting into a captain's profit margin.
