Overview:
During the Terran Great War, also known as the First World War, the aircraft known as bombers came into their own. The bomber was a different breed of aircraft than the fighters that also sprang out of that war, with no real surviving relation in modern space combat. In the air of thousands of worlds though, the ancient bomber still dispenses death and destruction on its enemies. During the Dark Ages, bombers often had a crew of 10 or more people, manning the bombs, acting as copilots, targeting machine guns at the enemy fighters, and maintaining communications with the home base. Modern bombers carry only two crewmembers, the pilot and his copilot. The pilot keeps the craft in the air while the copilot mans the weapons, communications, and other systems. Powered by jet engines for the last thousand-plus years and heavily armored, a squadron of bombers can level almost any target they choose. The standard heavy bomber can carry ten tons of bombs inside its bomb bay, where aerodynamics do not cause drag and slow down the aircraft, as happens with fighters that sling bombs under their wings. Still, a fully loaded bomber does lose a small amount of power, allowing an empty bomber to flee the scene of its assault faster than it came in. This fact has saved countless bombers over the centuries.
