Overview:

Prior to the fall of the Star League, many firms experimented with the LAM concept. Allied AeroSpace Inc. concentrated on converting the aerodynamic Phoenix Hawk and completed it within two years. The LAM version of the Phoenix Hawk was sold to the Star League Regular Army. At nearly twice the size of the Wasp and Stinger LAMS, already being marketed through the Inner Sphere, it was the largest LAM to be manufactured during the Star League times.
The Succession Wars were not kind to this powerful design though, and as the centuries passed they became less common. Oddly, it was the arrival of the Clans and their advanced technologies that saved the Phoenix Hawk LAM, and her smaller cousins, from complete extinction. Clan Nova Cat captured the last of the surviving LAM factories during the Invasion, and quickly took steps to preserve the nearly long-lost legacy of their revered Star League. When they joined the New Star League, they quickly began selling LAM parts to the member states of the New Star League and LAMs long unable to fly or locked in certain modes began to operate again.
The Word of Blake Jihad nearly ended LAMs again, but somehow the Nova Cats safeguarded the technology and kept parts flowing to any who fought the Word. After the Jihad ended, the Ozawa-Addicks Mercantile Alliance approached the Nova Cats with an offer. They would help the Nova Cats rebuild in exchange for Nova Cat consultants to help them jump start their own LAM factory. The new Phoenix Hawk LAM is a direct result of this cooperation.

Capabilities:

The sheer size of this Land-Air 'Mech makes it stand out from those previously produced. Avenger lasers held in each hand in BattleMech modes and slung under the wings in fighter mode gives it impressive engagement range. Designed to be capable of linking together to share targeting data for a single penetrating shot, the twin Avengers have ended the combat life of many enemies. The small flamer in the head has lesser power, but no less reason to exist. It allows the Phoenix Hawk to deal with any unarmored human foolish enough to approach it with evil intentions. Ferro-Aluminum armor covers the LAM as thickly as possible, giving it a formidable ability to take damage and continue operating. Possibly the most radical part of the design though are the twin arrays of improved jump thrusters tied directly into the main fusion engine that give it unprecidented speed in all modes. Capable of matching acceleration with most fighter designs in fact, the new Phoenix Hawk is a much more credible fighter than her ancestor, and when used in strafing missions or to perform standard ground operations they have done so with equal impressiveness.

Deployment

The Phoenix Hawk LAMs are more common in Ozawa and Nova Cat space, though both nations sell to anyone interested in purchasing them. Because of this, the LAMs have become widely used throughout the Human Sphere.
