Overview:
The Ice Ferret-or Fenris as Inner Sphere MechWarriors named it during the Clan Invasion-is the most heavily used medium OmniMech of the Wolf Touman. Ironically it was supposed to be the Ice Hellion's answer to Clan Wolf's newly debuted Timber Wolf heavy OmniMech. Emphasizing speed and firepower, the Clan's typical traits, many of their warriors boasted that they would de-claw the mighty Wolves, producing the then-named Wolf Hunter as fast as they could since 2948.
Tired of the constant harassment, many Wolf units began challenging Ice Hellions for possession of their Wolf Hunters. The next five years saw the Ice Hellions lose eighty percent of their Wolf Hunters, including their production facility on Tranquil to the Wolves. The Wolves renamed the OmniMech the Ice Ferret after the Hellion's sole natural predator. The campaign soured the other Clans from desiring the OmniMech, as it had lost so many trials, but the Wolves instead created a slew of new configurations for and spread it through its ranks, where it became a highly valued reconnaissance and support design.
Capabilities:
One of the few Clan designs to feature the Beagle active probe in its most common configuration, the Ice Ferret sees regular reconnaissance duty regardless of the composition of the rest of its Star. Its extended range particle projector cannon provides punch, augmented by a small Streak missile launcher and a small laser. The Streak system's efficient use of ammunition makes the Ice Ferret an excellent candidate for long missions away from logistical support.
When accompanied by lighter 'Mechs assigned to providing reconnaissance, the Ice Ferret often appears in Alternate Configuration A. Though lacking the long-range capabilities of the primary version, this model offers more weapons suited for infighting and carries an anti-missile system to reduce the effects of enemy fire. This configuration is most common when the Ice Ferret is deployed in the same Star with heavier 'Mechs.
Configuration B appears only when the Clans expect a quick and costly battle at close range. In such a situation, the unmatched pair of short-range missile launchers carried by this variant can deliver heavy damage, following up that done by the extended-range large laser. In such a configuration, the Ice Ferret can deliver enormous amounts of punishment at short range for a 'Mech of its size.
When called upon to provide long-range fire support, the Ice Ferret appears in Alternate Configuration C. This design, rarely seen, is unusual in two respects. It has three LRM-5 launchers, allowing it to target three enemy 'Mechs at once. In addition, this version of the Ice Ferret carries an Artemis IV fire-control system with each launcher, rather than a single Narc missile beacon for them all. The advantage of the independent systems is that some can continue operating after the Ice Ferret has taken damage to one area.
Configuration D is used when the Ice Ferret is on a long-range mission and lighter 'Mechs are providing reconnaissance. Though lacking the Beagle active probe, this version requires ammunition only for its anti-missile system. The combination of four medium pulse lasers on one frame is highly unusual.
Configuration E appears mainly when the Ice Ferret's MechWarrior wants to get in close and maul the enemy. It is also capable of sniping at extreme range, far beyond what most designs can manage.
The Wolves introduced two heavy lasers to the right arm of the H configuration. It also has an extended-range large laser and an SRM in the left arm.
Deployment
The Ice Ferret has long been the primary Wolf scout OmniMech, and can be seen in every unit they field. The Ice Hellions also use some, still calling them Wolf Hunters. Wolf's Dragoons build them with the Prime to D configuraion pods on Outreach, and sell them to the most trusted members of the Allied Mercenary Command. E and H configs are very rare in mercenary circles though.
